Karin Morris, AICP

Karin Morris, AICP, is an Associate Director of Planning at DVRPC, the metropolitan planning organization for Greater Philadelphia. She has completed numerous studies on livable communities, on such topics as transit-oriented development, designing density, and innovative zoning.

She received her Master’s in Urban Planning from the University of Michigan, where her thesis won the national Don Schon Award for practice-based learning from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP). She holds a Bachelor Degree in Journalism, magna cum laude, from Ohio Wesleyan University.

She was a 2005-2006 Knight Fellow in Community Building at the University of Miami, where she studied with leading new urbanists and conducted a week-long charrette in Memphis. She served on the APA-PA Southeast Section Board from 2003-2005. She also served from 2008 to 2014 on the Board of Directors for the Passyunk Square Civic Association, where she oversaw the creation of the Lower Italian Market Revitalization Plan, which won the American Planning Association’s 2009 National Planning Excellence Award for Best Grassroots Initiative. She was a 2014-2015 German Marshall Fund Urban and Regional Policy Fellow, which allowed her to travel to study age-friendly community efforts in the UK. In 2015, she was appointed a Practitioner Site Visitor for the Planning Accreditation Board, which accredits all undergraduate and graduate degree programs in planning in North America. She has presented at national conferences such as the APA, New Partners for Smart Growth, and Railvolution.

Karin is passionate about creating communities that are walkable, equitable, and beautiful--places that provide choices in transportation, housing, and the public realm. As Lewis Mumford said, “Trend is not destiny”, and we all shape the destiny of the places we help create.

Karin is a proud native Clevelander and South Philly resident, where she lives with her husband Robert and two hairless cats Sputnik and Cosmo.
