Jonas Maciunas, AICP

Jonas is principal of JVM Studio, a planning and urban design practice founded to help cities, towns, and neighborhoods manage change. His work includes civic engagement, street design, transportation network planning, public space, development planning and design guidelines, and tactical demonstration projects. He focuses on strategic solutions to conflicts created by growth, that reflect community values and respect economic, social, and geometric realities. Inga Saffron, architecture critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer, wrote that Vision2026, the planning framework Jonas wrote for Old City, “reflects a profound shift in thinking” in how business districts operate.

While having roots in Philadelphia, Jonas grew up in Connecticut. Before returning to Philly, he served as Complete Streets Coordinator and Senior Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer for the City of Hartford, managing strategic transportation and placemaking initiatives; projects included Hartford’s Intermodal Triangle, a transformative $23M project funded by the US Department of Transportation, and the iQuilt Plan, an award-winning downtown initiative to promote walking, culture, and innovation. He began his career at the architecture firm of Robert Orr and Associates in New Haven, where he helped prepare the first form-based code in New England. Jonas has been a graduate fellow at the University of Connecticut’s Center for Transportation and Urban Planning, and earned his BA studying political science at Yale University.

Jonas and his wife, Victoria, live in the Cedar Park neighborhood of West Philly with heir son, Aras. They do not own a car, spend as much of the summer as they can at the Jersey shore, and are members of the Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative.
